[He takes his time before introducing himself, establishing the purpose of this place, the fact that his magic definitely was depleted and not coming back by any means known to him, and weighing up the odds of his escaping by the usual means, before deigning to make his first journal entry. He has taken off his ridiculous supervillain hat, for effect:]

My my, is this not an ambitious effort? Certainly, a more elaborate one than the last chamber in which I was imprisoned. To whose hospitality do I owe my gratitude, may I ask? Which one-eyed wolf has clamped these strange jaws around my throat?

[He smiles, but it's unconvincing. His eyes look strangely pained.]

Or perhaps I expect too much in assuming this a prison, rather than an arsenal of purloined weapons, or a vault to hold the spoils of war?

[A slight pause, before he decides he's giving away far too much, and clicks the communicator off.]

If there's another one of these ships I don't want to know about it.

I've long accepted that his notion of order doesn't match Jurisdiction Fleet, so what he means the rank to be I couldn't say.

Chief Stildyne, by the by, which isn't any kind of real rank aboard. Warden, rehabilitative duties, unassigned.

I can't, actually. Only your warden once assigned will have that detail. As a general thing, inmates are here because they're locked into harming themselves or others beyond reason, and there's potential for them to get out of it.

I'm not your keeper. Unless I'm assigned you particularly, my authority extends as far as my safety or the barge's at large.

It is odd but it isn't so incomprehensible.

Some are here because the Admiral offers them the chance to do a form of good they'd never do otherwise. Some of us are here because we're offered payment nobody else can supply-- myself in that mercenary bunch. And the rest stand in the middle between body-for-hire and philanthropy.

I barely believe in good people as a species, but on occasion I've been impressed. They want to help their inmates get out and be the stronger for it.

[Sometimes they fail. He's never quite forgotten that.]

There's quite a few inmates come back to warden. You'll have to sort out for yourself whether they think it's worth the doing or they just want to pass on the misery. [He's audibly, if cynically joking.]

A man's life, my last inmate was worth, and he was kind enough to graduate-- I wasn't ever going to trick that gentleman into anything.

If another inmate indulges me it'll be a woman's life saved.

And that's as much detail as I give, mister-?

Huh. I knew a 'Loki', perhaps you're of the same culture. [In the same way that the Combine's history is lousy with Andrejs and Jennet, Ralph, and Brachi aren't vastly uncommon names through various planets. Right?]

'Ragnarok' mean anything to you? But, nevermind about that, once you've settled.

Mister Braxiatel was a damn sight brighter than me. He paid me attention, but I couldn't change that man's mind with any amount of tools. I counseled-- yelled at him from time to time-- but I wasn't here to break him. Lucky on my part because I'd never have done it.

Might've been. He startled me a bit: I hadn't met a god before. And he was gone soon after. More than a year now, I think.

[A shrug. Sorry.]

Something about a wolf, I think, and the end of the universe.

I want nothing to do with that, as I normally live in the universe and like it standing. But it was my introduction to the massive variance in the individuals aboard the barge.

I like to think so. Longer than my life at the very least. But that's not hard.

I'm near fifty. I think the universe can hold itself another five decades or so, don't you?
